Logitech MX 510 Performance Optical Gaming Mouse (Red)

The mouse is very good overall. It feels comfortable, though seems designed more for a three-finger approach, which may take a little adjusting to. The responsiveness is good, and the two thumb buttons are indispensable for general computer use (forward / back is so convenient) and for gaming (put 2 extra commands within each reach of your thumb).

I would recommend it as a replacement mouse for gamers and non-gamers alike.

Support from Logitech is excellent. My mouse died after a couple years, and they sent me a new one as a replacement. Couldn't ask for more than that.

The downside to this mouse is the poor placement of the three extra buttons around the wheel. The mouse is designed so that your middle finger rests on the middle of the wheel, so reaching the forward button requires lifting your hand off the mouse and stretching forward to hit it: doable, but not convenient. The backward button, behind the wheel, requires folding your middle finger up into a tight knuckle to reach, rather uncomfortable. The last button, on the top of the mouse, can not be accessed by the tip of your finger at all, and needs to be hit by the back of your knuckle. As such, these 3 buttons cannot be used regularly at all, and it is effectively a 5 button mouse, as opposed to the advertised 8.

Great mouse for gaming. Why spend a fortune on a Razer when you can get just as good of performance out of a mouse like this. I've been using this mouse for many years now and it still feels and reacts like the day I purchased it. When it finally does die. I will be replacing it with the exact same model if they are still making them!

I got this mouse as a gift for Christmas 4 and a half years ago, and after all that time it's still going strong and shows no sign of stopping. The mouse, from the beginning, looks awesome. The red-black design scheme really looks great. The mouse fits my hand perfectly, and moves smoothly across any surface, really. The buttons on the side of the mouse are great (so much so that I tend to think any other mouse is inferior when I use the side buttons). Also, the scroll buttons above and below the mousewheel are a great addition.

Overall, I've never seen a mouse perform and feel better than this, and certainly never look this good doing it.

- Precise
Despite possessing only a 800 DPI sensor, the tracking feels very precise and responsive and the movement of the pointer is very fluid at the medium pointer speed. At higher pointer speeds, however, the mouse begins to lose its precision and the movement of the pointer becomes a little choppy. If you need a mouse with a higher level of precision, consider the MX 518, which has a 1600 DPI sensor.

- Optical
The optical tracking does not work on all surfaces. Optical tracking works very poorly on shiny, transparent, or translucent surfaces. If you want a mouse that will work on any surface, you will need a laser mouse (such as the exceptional Logitech G9 gaming mouse, which is capable of resolutions up 3200 DPI).

- Ergonomic
The MX 510 is shaped to allow your entire hand to comfortably "hug" it. The molded groove on its left allows provides a comfortable spot to place your thumb. All the buttons - front, back, context (behind the wheel), wheel, speed-scroll-up, speed-scroll-down, and of course, the left and right click - are conveniently and intuitively located.

The design of the MX 510 is attractive and unique. It's burgundy color has a metallic sheen to it.

There are mice that provide better tracking with laser technology and higher resolution (DPI), but price of the MX 510 can't be beat. For an ordinary home user, I would recommend the MX 510. For a gamer who demands more from their mouse, I'd recommend the G9.

I've had this mouse for more than four years, and it continues to function as beautifully as it did new. I upgraded to this product from a Microsoft wireless model and realized I had no idea what I'd been missing. The increase in precision between that mouse and this helped not only my gaming, but my art (if it can be called that) as well. I know that there are newer, arguably better, mouse models on the market now, but I have no intention of switching until this goes bad -- which at this rate may be quite some time.
